January 31 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Virtual Workshop: The Use of Race and Ethnicity in Biomedical Research

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will establish an ad hoc committee to  assess the use of the social constructs of race and ethnicity in biomedical research. The study will evaluate how racialized group and ethnic categories are currently used in biomedical research, review existing guidance for researchers on the use of race as a variable, and provide recommendations to guide the scientific community in the future use of race and ethnicity in biomedical research.

The committee will hold a public workshop from 10 am to 3:30 pm CT Jan. 31 with invited speakers to explore different research contexts in which race and ethnicity arise and new research approaches and alternatives to using race and ethnicity categories. On Feb. 1, the committee will meet in closed session.
