SUMMARY:National Lung Cancer Screening Day
DESCRIPTION:Enhancing Accessibility To Lung Cancer Screening\nThe American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable (ACS NLCRT)\, GO2 for Lung Cancer (GO2)\, Radiology Health Equity Coalition (RHEC)\, and American College of Radiology (ACR) have partnered once again for the second annual National Lung Cancer Screening Day (“National LCS Day”) on Saturday\, November 11\, 2023. We are promoting this lifesaving event to screen more individuals and raise awareness about lung cancer screening. \nAs part of a key initiative of Lung Cancer Awareness Month\, and in acknowledgment of National LCS Day falling on the Veterans Day holiday\, the ACS NLCRT\, ACR\, RHEC\, and GO2 have partnered with the Veterans Administration on this campaign in order to salute our Veterans by increasing outreach and awareness to our veteran population\, in turn saving more lives. As part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month and in partnership with the ACR\, RHEC\, and GO2 we are promoting this lifesaving event to screen more individuals and raise awareness about lung cancer screening. The President’s Cancer Panel recommends lung cancer screening as the single most effective strategy for reducing mortality from the disease and closing the gap to improve health equity and access. To achieve this goal\, the President’s Cancer Panel has charged individuals\, health systems\, and communities with communicating and promoting lung cancer screening. \nTen years have passed since the USPSTF first recommended low-dose CT for lung cancer screening\, yet lung cancer screening rates remain low\, with less than 1 in 10 eligible individuals having undergone CT screening. This is a striking contrast to more established screening tests for other cancers\, including screening mammography (ca. 80%) and Colorectal Cancer Screening (ca. 70%). Access to and utilization of LCS has been particularly challenging for rural and racial/ethnic minority groups\, who are more likely to live more than 30 minutes away from a designated LCS center\, be underinsured\, and have lower health literacy levels. \nInadequate access to care and low utilization rates for LCS present an opportunity for patient and caregiver advocates\, community health organizations\, medical professionals\, cancer centers\, health systems\, payers\, and industry partners to work together to promote health equity\, reduce healthcare disparities\, and enhance accessibility to lifesaving and effective lung cancer screening. \nTo participate\, lung cancer screening centers nationwide are being encouraged to open their doors to patients on Saturday\, November 11\, 2023. This will allow individuals who cannot take time off from work to be screened\, increasing the accessibility of lung cancer screening overall. Through the promotion of National LCS Day\, screening centers are not only extending screening opportunities to those who may be unaware of this effective\, lifesaving screening option but also are increasing the awareness of lung cancer screening within their community. \nNational LCS Day is meant to serve as a catalyst for screening in general. Rather than waiting until November to work lung screening into their routine\, patients and clinicians alike are encouraged to make screening a year-round priority. Please join the lung cancer community for National LCS Day on Saturday\, November 11\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Shared Decision-Making - A Catalyst for Real-World Research Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Event presented by the National Academy of Sciences \nEvent Link \nThe Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable\, in collaboration with the HIBAR Research Alliance (HRA)\, will convene a webinar to discuss how cross-sectoral leadership teams can collaborate in shared decision-making when working on use-inspired basic research. The term HIBAR (Highly Integrative Basic and Responsive) was introduced in 2017 to name a specific category of research projects that had previously lacked a clear definition. HIBAR research projects bring together diverse leadership teams\, both from research fields (often in academia) and from practical sectors (commercial and/or non-profit). They collectively make the key decisions that hybridize fundamental research with real-world problem-solving to yield significant benefits. \nDuring this webinar\, Dr. Lorne Whitehead\, Director for HRA and Professor at University of British Columbia\, will provide a short overview and purpose of HIBAR Research Alliance. A panel of experts (below) will then discuss the thoughtful approach to shared decision-making in cross-sectoral research projects\, from different perspectives. The goal of the webinar is to share actionable advice that can be replicated or adapted to other contexts. \nExpert Panelists: \nDr. Holly Buck\, Assistant Professor\, University at Buffalo \nDr. Christine Kreuder Johnson\, Professor and Director of the EpiCenter for Disease Dynamics\, University of California Davis \nMr. Dave Kasik\, Former Senior Technical Fellow\, Boeing (retired) \nGuest Moderator: \nDr. Ira Bennett\, Director for Federal Research Engagement\, Arizona State University

SUMMARY:Health Equity Webinar: Understanding the Perspectives of Lung Cancer Screening Among Latinos
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, lung cancer is one of the most common cancers and it kills more people than any other type of cancer. Racial/ethnic populations are disproportionally affected by lung cancer as they are less likely to be diagnosed early and receive adequate treatment. \nLung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among Latino men and the second leading cause among Latinas (after breast cancer). Lung cancer screening can help to detect the disease earlier when the treatment can be successful and dramatically improve survival rates. \nJoin the Nuestras Voces Network and the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) for a webinar that will present the results of a qualitative study looking at the perspectives of lung cancer screening among Latinos. This study will inform the development of an intervention to increase lung cancer screening in the Latino community. \nThursday\nOctober 26\, 2023 \n1 pm CT/noon MT \nEvent Link \n  \nFor more information about the webinar you may contact: \nnuestrasvoces@healthyamericas.org \nFrancisco_Cartujano@URMC.Rochester.edu

SUMMARY:Health Equity Webinar: Pancreatic Cancer Risk Factors and Symptoms
DESCRIPTION:Many pancreatic cancer symptoms are common ones for many other less-lethal conditions. So how do you know when to look for pancreatic cancer? \nLet’s Win Pancreatic Cancer and the National Alliance for Hispanic Health’s Nuestras Voces Network Program have teamed up for a webinar to explain the relationship between risk factors and symptoms\, to shed some light on getting diagnosed as soon as possible. \nThis webinar focuses on Risk Factors and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer. It will be held on Wednesday\, October 25th at 2 p.m. Eastern. Oncologist Dr. Shaalan Beg and gastroenterologist Dr. Oscar Alvarez will discuss how the combination of risk factors and symptoms can lead doctors to think of pancreatic cancer. The moderator is Juan Pellerano-Rendon\, a pancreatic cancer advocate who lost his mother to the disease. \nPancreatic cancer is notorious as a cancer that is diagnosed late and is difficult to treat. In fact\, it is poised to become the second leading cause of cancer deaths by 2030. About 64\,000 people are found to have pancreatic cancer each year in the U.S.\, with a slightly higher rate of occurrence in Black Americans. The five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is about 12 percent\, in part because the disease is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. About 10 percent of pancreatic cancer cases are hereditary—two or more family members have had the disease. In between 10 and 20 percent of those cases there is an identified genetic mutation associated with the cancer\, such as BRCA\, but often there is no known mutation. \nRegister here  to learn more pancreatic cancer risk factors and symptoms. \nPancreatic cancer symptoms are common to many other less-lethal conditions. By putting together symptoms and risk factors\, gastroenterologists and primary care doctors can recognize the possibility that the patient has pancreatic cancer and get testing started as early as possible. Earlier diagnosis leads to more treatment options and a better survival rate.
